Sulaymaniyah Liberation Day is celebrated annually on March 7 in the city of Sulaymaniyah, which is located in the Kurdish Autonomous Region of Iraq. This day is dedicated to the memory of the events that took place in 1991, when the Kurdish population of the region rose up against the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein, which marked the beginning of the struggle for autonomy and freedom for the Kurds in Iraq.

Historical context
During the uprisings in 1991, which broke out after the end of the Gulf War, the Kurdish people began mass demonstrations and resistance against the repression of the regime of Saddam Hussein. On March 7, 1991, the residents of Sulaymaniyah, inspired by the general wave of protests, were able to achieve the liberation of the city from the control of the central government, which became an important victory on the path to the autonomy of Kurdistan.

How Sulaymaniyah Liberation Day is celebrated
Official ceremonies and events. The Kurdistan Region leadership holds ceremonies where local and regional leaders speak, recalling the historical events and the achievements of the participants in the uprising.

Commemorative events. In Sulaymaniyah and other parts of Kurdistan, flower-laying ceremonies, rallies and demonstrations are held to honor veterans and all those who participated in the struggle for freedom.

Cultural and educational events. Exhibitions, film screenings and lectures are organized on the history of the Kurdish uprising, culture and the role of Sulaymaniyah in the formation of Kurdish autonomy.

Patriotic processions and concerts. On the day of the holiday, concerts and patriotic processions are held with Kurdish symbols, banners and songs expressing pride in the national identity.
